Jaweazy and I met on a freelance marketplace, where I was shopping around an almost unreasonable brief: a combat theme in a 10 KB MIDI file, four instruments, seamless loop — and it had to sound good on the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth, the stock Windows synthesizer nobody composes for on purpose. On that synth there’s no production polish to hide behind; the notes have to do all the work. And because it would loop under live gameplay, it had to stay fun to listen to for ten straight minutes.
He delivered a banger — hear it for yourself ↗. That one experimental track grew into a nine-month collaboration: an OST about 23 tracks deep for Piracy on the New Frontier ↗, in whatever style each scene called for, each track iterated until it was right.
Here’s how he describes working together:
Working with Mark has always been a seamless experience for me. During our first collaboration, I worked with him to create music and sound effects for his game “Piracy on the New Frontier”. Mark was very proactive and outlined everything he was looking for. He knew exactly what he wanted, and could provide detailed, productive feedback to every song/sound without being harsh or vague.
This went on for about 9 months, but the time flew by because of how pleasant and streamlined the process was. He saw me as a true partner in his project, and I’ve gladly worked on others with him ever since. Mark’s intelligent, communicative, and above all else a great guy!
